Openers

Me: Have I have some great ideas for the opening of stories.

You: Great! Now all you need to do is write the stories!

Me: Um … that sounds like a lot of work.

What if I wrote a story around one of these openers? Which one would you choose?

1 Thirty-six days. No program, no chip, just thirty-six days. Someday he’ll fall back off the wagon, and when he does it will be with a thud. Someday, but not today.

2 On the largest petal of the largest flower of the largest geranium in the garden, there stood a tiny ladybug.

3. Just another Wednesday. But every Wednesday is just another Wednesday in retrospect. Every Wednesday but this one.

4. The secret to a good lie isn’t believing it but rather fervently wishing it were true. People say lies only get you in trouble, but that has never been my experience. I’m a great liar.

5. I had been arrested before so that part didn’t worry me none. I had to admit this one had a certain stickiness associated with it.

6. Crews are responding to reports of a kayaker in distress off shore of the 5200 block of Beach Drive SW. Please avoid the area.

7. They were interchangeable; people often called Julie Daisy and Daisy Julie. Julie was an unflappable third grader, so it didn’t bother her much, but Daisy seemed to take it personally. Which was unusual as Daisy was the dog.

Which of these openers would you like to see expanded into a whole story?
