Mary is born in Cork, Ireland in 1834.

This is not a great time to be Irish in Ireland. Mary comes of age during the Great Potato Famine. The famine was particularly bad in the south and the west of Ireland. Millions of Irish flee the country to avoid disease and starvation.

As soon as Mary reaches adulthood, she follows suit. Next stop: Wales.
